- CRAFTSMANSHIP FOR ALL FIVE SENSES: The heat in the drum roaster is gently increased. After about 10 minutes, you’ll hear a noise: Crackles. Pops. This is what’s known as the first crack. The coffee beans are reacting to the heat, and you can hear it. Now the first phase of roasting is completed and the roasting master decides, how much heat and time is still necessary for the desired roast.
