Details: Eastern Red Cedar is a coniferous evergreen tree with a thick, sluggish growth rate. The oldest tree found was 940 years old and came from West Virginia. The reddish-brown bark is fibrous and peels away in thin pieces. The leaves are divided into two types: sharp, spreading needle-like juvenile leaves and firmly adpressed scale-like adult leaves, which are grouped in opposing decussate pairs or whorls of three on occasion. Juvenile leaves can be seen on immature plants up to three years old, as well as on older trees as dispersed shoots, generally in the shadow.
